At Stanhope Barrington C of E Primary School, we ensure our History curriculum develops an understanding of local and British history, its values and the wider world, focusing on an understanding of chronology and knowledge. The children use a range of sources and resources, including visits and visitors, to enable them to become characters from the past, living in that time. Children are encouraged to dig deeper and be inquisitive to find out more, just as a Historian would. We provide them with the opportunities to understand and use abstract historical terms. Themed events, such as Black History month and War week, are important and used to highlight the key events that have happened and how we have changed and adapted for the future based upon what we have learnt. Regular visits to our local historical sites encourage the children to look at our local area and that of the North East and how this has shaped our history.

Castles – In History the children have been concentrating on castles and how they important they are to the North East. In this session the children researched a Motte & Bailey castle and then used Lego to create their own version. The children had to ensured they created a motte (mound) and also a bailey which included a fenced off area.
Sapphire Learning Zone
WW2 Recipes – During war week, the Sapphire children learned about rationing during WW2 and how it affected what people could eat and make. We looked at a modern cookie recipe and identified which ingredients would have been rationed. The children then made their own carrot cookies, with replacement ingredients using a WW2 recipe.

How far did the Roman Empire spread? – Today the children in the Emerald Learning Zone used atlases to mark out on a map how far the Roman Empire spread. We looked at countries in Europe and North Africa and used tracking skills to move from the atlas to our own map.
